Presentation of the "SupAutism" Project

04.03.2026     19     AzTU

The presentation of the "SupAutism" project was held at the Azerbaijan Technical University (AzTU), organized jointly by the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Metallurgy and the Student Youth Organization. The event covered SDG 3 - Good Health and Well-being, SDG 10 - Reduced Inequalities, as well as directions related to health education, promoting mental health, and increasing public awareness.

In his opening speech, the Dean of the faculty, Malik Garayev, stated that the "SupAutism" project, as the winner of the Azerbaijan Youth Foundation's grant competition on the theme "Digital," had won a grant of 4,200 manats and that the project carries significant social importance. He called on other young people participating in the event to work on projects aimed at solving today's pressing problems, thereby contributing to the sustainable development of society, particularly in the areas of scientific research and innovative approaches, student welfare programs, and university-community cooperation.

The project leader, Sanan Mirzayev, a student from group 8123ad of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Metallurgy, presented the mobile application and website created within the framework of the "SupAutism" project, stating that it aims to provide psychological, pedagogical, and social support to parents of children with autism. The services offered within the project are based on the principles of rehabilitation and therapy support, a multidisciplinary approach, and academic-healthcare cooperation. The sections available on the platforms, such as "Initial Information Section on Autism," "Child Behavior Tests," "Step-by-Step Instructions and Recommendations for Parents," and "Practical Materials Facilitating the Daily Life of Children with Autism," are designed to provide initial education for parents who observe signs of autism in their children, as well as to assist in the early detection of developmental disorders and in structuring the daily activities of children with autism. The platform makes accessible to parents a set of 76 questions consisting of 4 blocks, prepared by the Autism Research Institute and accepted as an international standard, used to determine the likelihood of autism in children.

Speaking after the project presentation, Isa Khalilov, Head of the Department of Machine Design, Mechatronics, and Industrial Technologies, emphasized that the students had done a considerable amount of work on the project and gave his recommendations regarding its further development. He noted that the project would contribute in the future to inclusive higher education, equal educational opportunities, and the principles of equality in the academic environment.

Within the framework of the seminar, psychologists Shahla Amanova and Nargiz Ismayilova, who participated in the creation of the project and specialize in working with individuals with autism, spoke and first and foremost brought to the participants' attention that autism is not an illness, but a difference. They stated that during the project's development, they shared their knowledge and experience with the platform creators regarding the most frequently asked questions by parents of children with autism, the problems they encounter, ways to overcome them, and so on. This approach is based on the principles of social inclusion and diversity, prevention of discrimination, a rights-based approach, and social justice initiatives.

During the interactive part of the program, the psychologists conducted a training session with the seminar participants titled "Reaction of Individuals with Autism to Events." This helped participants better understand individuals with autism and was significant in terms of academic integration of persons with disabilities and community-based health initiatives.

At the end of the event, it was emphasized that such initiatives play an important role in promoting healthy lives and social well-being, social inclusion and diversity, as well as creating equal opportunities for all members of society, thereby contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals.
