The Institute of Biomedical Engineering of Azerbaijan Technical University (AzTU) has successfully completed an important research project implemented in collaboration with renowned scientific research centers in the Netherlands, Germany and other European countries.

The results of the study were accepted by the “European Journal of Surgical Oncology” (EJSO), one of the prestigious journals in the field of oncology. The main topic of the project is the application of artificial intelligence technologies, especially Large Language Models (LLM), in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. The research combines modern information technologies - artificial intelligence, intelligent analysis of medical data and methods of retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) of knowledge with a hybrid approach.

The team conducted special training on the GPT-4 model, based on the “gold standard” guiding principles adopted in the field of oncology in Europe. The new generation RAG-based GPT-4 system being developed serves to make a more accurate and faster diagnosis of breast cancer, optimize the doctor-patient dialogue based on pathological and oncological signs, as well as support the decision-making process of doctors. The research results have shown that the presented model not only increases the accuracy of the diagnosis process, but also creates conditions for more efficient use of time by reducing the necessary communication time between patients and doctors. In addition, the system minimizes the risk of errors by ensuring compliance of clinical decisions with European protocols.

This international cooperation is not only an important achievement for Azerbaijani science, but also ensures closer integration of our country into the global research network in the field of biomedical engineering and artificial intelligence. The project can also demonstrate the wide application possibilities of artificial intelligence in medical diagnostics and personalized treatment approaches, and in the future it can make significant contributions to the management of other diseases.
