A memorial event was held at the Turkiye-Azerbaijan University (TAU) on February 26 to commemorate the 34th anniversary of the Khojaly tragedy. The event was attended by the faculty and students of TAU and Azerbaijan Technical University (AzTU).
First, the memory of the victims of the Khojaly genocide, as well as the sons of the Motherland who sacrificed their lives for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of our lands, was commemorated with a minute of silence. The national anthems of Azerbaijan and Turkiye were played.
The moderator of the event, Habib Mirzayev, head of the Department of Humanities at AzTU, said that on the night of February 25-26, 1992, Armenian armed groups razed the city of Khojaly to the ground with the participation of the 366th regiment of the former Soviet army located in the city of Khankendi. As a result of the next mass massacre committed by the Armenian aggressors against the Azerbaijani people, 613 people, including 106 women, 63 children, and 70 elderly people, were killed with particular cruelty, 1,275 civilians were taken prisoner, and the fate of 150 people is still unknown. As a result of this act of genocide, 8 families were completely destroyed, 25 children lost both parents, and 130 children lost one of their parents.
Habib Mirzayev noted that even though 34 years have passed since the Khojaly genocide, the pain and suffering caused by the tragedy will never heal.
Speaking later, Umran Uygun, Head of the Food Engineering Program at TAU, and Ahmad Joshar, Head of the Computer Engineering Program, noted that the Khojaly tragedy is one of the most terrible and bloody crimes of humanity.
Acting rector of TAU, Vilayat Valiyev, said that the Khojaly tragedy was a genocide committed not only against the Azerbaijani people, but also against humanity as a whole. He noted that as a result of the political will of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, President Ilham Aliyev, and the power of our army, the avenging of our martyrs in the 44-day Patriotic War, which was written in golden letters in our history, was achieved. Vilayat Valiyev noted that the Azerbaijani people will never forget the Khojaly genocide.
