The Department of Radio Engineering and Telecommunications initially operated under the name "Electrical Communications." It was established in 1964 at the Azerbaijan Polytechnic Institute named after Chingiz Ildyrym (now Azerbaijan Technical University). The first head of the department was Kurbanhuseyn Abdulragim oglu Ragimov, who played a significant role in its foundation. In the following years, the department was led by Professors Alshan Nariman oglu Gasanov, Gazanfar Mamed oglu Imamverdiyev, Tofik Mukhammed oglu Mansurov, and Bayram Ganimet oglu Ibrahimov.
By the decision of the Academic Council of Azerbaijan Technical University, from 2006 to 2019, the department operated under the name "Multichannel Telecommunication Systems."
In 2019, by the decision of the Academic Council, the departments of "Telecommunication and Information Security Systems" and "Communication Networks and Switching Systems" were merged and renamed "Telecommunications and Information Security."
The Department of Radio Engineering at Azerbaijan Technical University was established in 1961 within the Faculty of Automation and Computing Technology at Azerbaijan Polytechnic Institute under the name "Radio Engineering, Communication, and Industrial Electronics," based on a special decision by the Council of Ministers of the Azerbaijan SSR to train engineering personnel in the fields of radio engineering and communications for the republic. From 1962 to 1997, the department was known as "General and Theoretical Radio Engineering." Due to the growing demand for radio engineering and communication engineers in the republic, in 1974, the "Television and Radio Systems" department was separated from the Radio Engineering Department by decision of the Ministry of Education. In 1990, based on the educational and technical resources of the departments of "Radio Engineering" and "Television and Radio Systems," the "Electrodynamics and Radioelectronic Devices" department was established. In November 2019, due to structural changes at AzTU, the departments of "Television and Radio Systems" and "Electrodynamics and Radioelectronic Devices" were merged and renamed the "Department of Radio Engineering."
By the decision of the Academic Council on February 15, 2021, the departments of Telecommunications and Information Security and Radio Engineering were merged and given a new name — Radio Engineering and Telecommunications. The educational process incorporates the latest advancements in science and technology in the fields of radio engineering, telecommunications, and information security. A local computer network has been established within the department, along with a Wi-Fi network providing students with internet access during classes. The department has also created educational laboratories that meet modern technological requirements, as well as methodological materials and their electronic databases for teaching disciplines. Modern information and telecommunication technologies are used for conducting research work.
